1993 Boston College versus Notre Dame
The 1993 version of the Holy War game between Boston College and Number 1 Notre Dame was a top-shelf game that had national title implications. The Irish knocked off the top team in the country, Florida State, a week earlier, and this home game against un-ranked BC at home seemed to be an automatic "W." However, there is a reason they play the games. Although the Notre Dame offense piled up 427 yards of offense and scored five touchdowns, BC was up to the challenge, building a sizable lead. The Fighting Irish came back from 21 points down in the fourth quarter to go ahead by one but left time for the Eagles to work. Quarterback Glenn Foley moved the ball to the Notre Dame 24, and kicker David Gordon nailed a 41-yard field goal as time expired, ending Notre Dame's bid for an undefeated season. Despite beating #7 Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Day, the national championship was awarded to Florida State. Final score: Boston College 41, Notre Dame 39. ESPN in 2019 ranked it as the 76th Greatest College Game ever.
