When the No. 13 Tennessee Volunteers traveled to South Bend to face the No. 5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on November 9, 1991, the football world stopped and took notice. This was a big game with two of the top programs facing off. Johnny Majors had the Vols playing great ball, and Lou Holtz patrolled the Notre Dame sideline. The Golden Domers looked the part of the higher seed for the front part of the game. QB Tony Brooks and running back Jerome Bettis were executing at top performance, eventually building a large 31-7 lead. Ole Rocky Top was not finished, though; as a matter of fact, they had barely started. The Volunteers rallied from the 24-point deficit in the first half to go up 35-34 with 4:03 remaining on an Andy Kelly-to-Aaron Hayden TD pass. The Irish marched down the field to get in field goal range. With its starting kicker injured on an earlier FG block for a TD, backup Rob Leonard lined up for a 27-yarder. Leonard had never attempted a field goal in a college game, and yet, somehow, the game came down to this moment for him. Everything was going perfectly for another Irish miracle: a good snap, a great hold, a foot hit the ball solidly, and then it all got rear-ended, literally. Tennessee's Jeremy Lincoln got just enough of the ball to stray it, of course, with his butt of all things. Vols hold on and win 35-34! ESPN in 2019 ranked it as the 53rd Greatest College Game ever.
