November 2, 1935, was the first-ever gridiron meeting of Notre Dame and Ohio State University, and what a game it was! The highly anticipated contest in Columbus was a big attraction, although it was the middle of the Great Depression. The Buckeyes had little trouble selling over 81,000 tickets to fans eager to see the game. An undefeated Ohio State was 4-0 going into the contest. Notre Dame was 5-0, having beat Navy the previous week 14-0. The Buckeyes took an early 13-0 lead into the fourth quarter; however, the Irish rallied late and scored three touchdowns. The go-ahead one on backup quarterback Bill Shakespeare's pass to Wayne Millner with 32 seconds to go as Notre Dame prevailed 18-13. ESPN in 2019 ranked it as the 40th Greatest College Game ever.
