Fourth Of July Football In 1895 Butte

From football’s beginning in America’s Eastern colleges, the game was played almost exclusively in the fall. Only on the West Coast and in the Rockies did 19th-century teams play football at other times of the year, with some playing football year-round. — www.footballarchaeology.com

J P Rooneys Football

A semi-professional team run by Art Rooney Sr in 1931. The team started as the Hope-Harveys, and later after gaining sponsorship, turned into the Majestic Radios of Loeffler's Electronic Store. The team's affiliation with Loeffler's ended prior to the team's 1931 season. When James decided to run for the Pennsylvania General Assembly, Art renamed the team the "J.P. Rooneys" as a way to promote his brother's campaign. James Rooney would go on to win the election easily.
In 1933 Art Rooney would found the Pittsburgh Pirates NFL franchise and in 1940 rename them the Steelers.

Fred Chicken Bio

Born April 5, 1888, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was early gridiron legend Fred Chicken. His real name was Fred S. Slepicka, which when translated means "chicken." Fred was a tailback/halfback who played for the Minneapolis Marines (1915-1918), prior to that team's entry into the NFL. With him the Marines team went 34-3-1 between the years of 1913 thru 1917. 1918 during World War I Fred coached and played for the St. Paul Aviators School. He later played for the Rock Island Independents.

First APFA Game Played

September 26, 1920 - The first game featuring an American Professional Football Association team would be played on September 26, 1920 as the Rock Island Independents beat up on their non-league opponent the St. Paul Ideals 48-0. The APFA would change its name to the National Football League in 1922 so in essence this is the very first NFL game played involving at least one team that was in Ralph Hay’s organizational meeting on September 17, 1920.

The First Night Football Game

September 28, 1892 - The very first night football game was played in Mansfield, Pennsylvania on September 28, 1892 between Mansfield State Normal and Wyoming Seminary. Mansfield hosted the 13th annual Tioga County Agricultural, Mechanical, and Industrial Fair in late September 1892.
