Football HistoryMean Green at and End? | The Forth-Worth Star telegram reported on April 3, 1983, that North Texas State was considering dropping its football program after a 2-9 season in which the team sold only 4200 tickets for the four home games out of an expected 20,000. The draw deficit created a budget problem for the team, as the football program lost $400,000 in 1982.

Fortunately, the program did not fold, and the 1983 North Texas State Mean Green football team represented North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas) during the 1983 NCAA Division I-AA football season as part of the Southland Conference. Under the leadership of head coach Corky Nelson, in his second year, the team achieved an 8–4 overall record.
