Born on May 26, 1902, in Paris, Illinois, Bernie Shively was a cornerstone of the University of Illinois football team from 1924 to 1926. Playing guard, Shively's athleticism and power were instrumental in the success of the legendary halfback Red Grange. The National Football Foundation highlights Shively as the agile and quick blocker who consistently created opportunities for Grange's electrifying runs. For three seasons, Shively anchored the Illinois offensive line, spending two alongside Grange and earning consensus All-America honors in his senior year of 1926, recognized for his outstanding contributions on both offense and defense.
