"The Mountaineer Comet: Ira Rodgers' Trailblazing Career"

Born on May 26, 1895, in Bethany, West Virginia, Ira Rodgers was a transformative figure for the West Virginia University Mountaineers, excelling as a halfback and quarterback from 1915-1917 and again in 1919. Known as the team's fastest player, Rodgers led a resurgent Mountaineer squad after World War I, guiding them to eight victories in ten games in 1919 and leading the nation in scoring with 147 points. His senior campaign saw him orchestrate dominant wins and even conquer traditional powerhouses. Beyond his rushing prowess, Rodgers was also a premier early passer, showcasing his arm strength with a remarkable 51-yard空中傳球 in 1917. His exceptional talent earned him consensus All-American honors in 1919, the first in WVU history.
