"Why Mean Joe?"
Last updated 📅 2025-05-15
The name Mean Joe Greene is synonymous with the devastating, punishing style of defensive play that number 75 for the Pittsburgh Steelers demonstrated during the 1970s.
However, Joe was not his real name, and by all accounts of those who know him, he is a nice guy. His real name is Charles Edward Greene, so where does "Mean Joe" come from?
A fun fact about Joe Greene, nicknamed "Mean Joe", is that his nickname came from his college team, the North Texas State Mean Green (now University of North Texas). Their strong defensive play inspired the team's nickname. (Note: some say Texas State got its nickname from Mean Joe!) Joe also adopted the name "Joe" from his aunt, who thought he resembled boxer Joe Louis.
