Last updated 📅 2025-05-25

Born on May 25, 1911, in Larksville, Pennsylvania, Joseph "Joe" Skladany became a legendary defensive end for the University of Pittsburgh from 1931 to 1933. Known as "Mugsy," Skladany was a force to be reckoned with, his fierce tackling and impenetrable presence instilling dread in opposing runners. Scouts reportedly warned players to "Stay away from Skladany!" His senior year (1933) was particularly dominant, holding opponents to a net negative six rushing yards around his side. During his three varsity seasons, Pitt amassed an impressive 24-3-2 record, and he is credited as a key figure in building Pitt's winning tradition under Coach Jock Sutherland.

Road to the Pro Game

After his stellar college career, Joe Skladany played professionally for the Pittsburgh Pirates (later the Steelers) of the National Football League (NFL) in 1934. He played in 12 games as a right end, recording 9 receptions for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns.
