Born on May 26, 1887, in Exeter, New Hampshire, Edward "Ed" Hart displayed remarkable resilience and talent during his football career at Princeton University from 1908 to 1911. His journey was uniquely challenging from the outset. In his final high school game, a collision with the goalpost resulted in a serious neck injury, forcing him to wear a steel and leather neck brace for his initial seasons with the Tigers. This adversity, however, did not deter Hart. His determination and skill shone through, culminating in consensus All-America honors in 1911, the year he finally shed the restrictive brace. Renowned sportswriter Grantland Rice lauded him as "one of the greatest tackles of all time," a testament to his exceptional ability despite the early setback.
