He rose to prominence during his college career at Stanford University (1939-1941). Initially a tailback, his career took off when coach Clark Shaughnessy implemented the T-formation, positioning Albert as the quarterback. This proved to be a masterstroke, as Albert became the first college T-formation quarterback in modern football history. In 1940, he led the "Wow Boys" to an undefeated 10-0 season, culminating in a Rose Bowl victory over Nebraska and a No. 2 national ranking. A two-time All-American (1940, 1941), Albert finished fourth and third in the Heisman Trophy voting in those respective years. He was renowned for his ball-handling skills and is credited with perfecting and popularizing the bootleg play.
