According to a recent report by Chris Vannini in the Athletic members of the Appalachian State Football team and coaching staff joined others in a peaceful protest in North Carolina against racism. Former Mountaineer player and now assistant Strength Coach, Markell Clark helped to organize the protest with the help of other student atheletes at App State. Defensive Lineman Demetrius Taylor, woman's track standout Kyndavee Bichara and the campus Black Student Association were driving forces along with Clark in the quick organizing of the group.
Hundreds of people joined the rally after message flyers were posted in the preceding days of the event which according to Clark and others was to protest all racial injustice, not just acts of police brutality including the recent tragic death of George Floyd by police officers in Minnesota. It was not just students of the school that joined the protest, Appalachian State students were sent home months ago due to COVID-19 concerns. Adult members of the community showed up in support, including the Mountaineers Head Football Coach, Shawn Clark and school Athletic Director, Doug Gillin.
Clark stated he was there to support the cause to peacefully send the message with his players that people of all colors need to have a voice and more importantly the right to be treated equally.
This group of people did things the right way in their peaceful protest. They stand with one voice for the all important cause for change and they did it without violence or harming anyone's property. Well done Mountaineers, well done!
