Washington's Walk-On Sensation Herb Mul-Key is Remembered By Frank ReadingHerb Mul Key
In 1972 the Washington Redskins franchise held a public try-out to see if they could find a player or two that could make a difference. Head Coach George Allen, a man that was known to like having veteran players went out of character and found a real gem. Special teams Coach Marv Levi convinced Allen to hold on to a running back that had a real nice special teams skill set. Herb Mul-key was the player and boy could he return a kick-off and break tackles in the open field.
The 1973 season saw Mul-Key earn an NFC roster spot as a kick return specialist and he helped propel his team into a Super Bowl VIII appearance against the Miami Dolphins.
