Born July 25, 1954, in Columbia, Mississippi, Walter Jerry Payton, nicknamed "Sweetness," left an indelible mark on the sport of football. COLLEGE CAREER: Payton's collegiate career flourished at Jackson State University. From 1971 to 1974, he became a standout running back for the Tigers. His remarkable athleticism and versatility were evident as he amassed impressive statistics, breaking school records and earning numerous accolades. In his senior year alone, he rushed for over 1,600 yards and scored 27 touchdowns, solidifying his status as one of the nation's premier college football players. His time at Jackson State not only honed his skills but also prepared him for the challenges of the professional game.  

ROAD TO THE PRO GAME: Payton's exceptional college performance made him a highly coveted prospect in the 1975 NFL Draft. The Chicago Bears recognized his immense talent and selected him as the fourth overall pick. This marked the beginning of a legendary professional career spent entirely with the Bears. Initially facing challenges adapting to the NFL, Payton quickly established himself as a dominant force. He earned nine Pro Bowl selections and was a seven-time First-Team All-Pro. Payton also received the prestigious NFL Man of the Year award in 1977, recognizing his charitable work and community involvement. At the time of his retirement, Payton held numerous NFL records, most notably the all-time leading rushing record with 16,726 yards. He also amassed 110 rushing touchdowns, caught 492 passes for 4,538 receiving yards, and scored 15 receiving touchdowns.
