The 1930 NFL season was a close race between the Pack and the G-Men. In Week Nine, both sides had excellent records -- with Green Bay at 8-0-0 and New York hot on its heels with 10-1-0. On November 23rd, they locked horns at the Polo Grounds in New York in front of a crowd of 37,000. The Giants emerged victorious with a score of 13-6, setting their record to 11 wins and two losses (.846). But after Thanksgiving Day saw them lose to Staten Island 7-6, Green Bay bounced back, defeating the Frankford Yellow Jackets by 25–7 and retaking the lead with nine wins to 2 losses (.818).
It went down to the final weeks as Green Bay fell in week 13 to Chicago Bears by three scores while New York outlasted the Frankford eleven by a touchdown. The standings were tighter than ever as New York, at 13-4, was a mere .004 behind the 10-3 Packers. Green Bay had a game remaining, however, and should they lose to the Portsmouth Spartans, the Giants would be assured the NFL Title.
The pressure was on the Packers. Green Bay scored on a TD pass from Red Dunn to Wuert Engelmann. However, the crucial extra-point attempt by Verne Lewellen missed its mark. Green Bay led 6–0. Chuck Bennett ran for a touchdown for the Spartans, but the extra point attempt by Tiny Lewis was blocked, and when the game ended, the 6–6 tie. The 10-3-1 record and .769 winning percentage gave the Packers the 1930 title. A Repeat as Title Town got its second NFL crown.
