May 12, 1872, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Art Wheeler became a vital component of the Princeton University football program during the nascent stages of the sport.  

College Career:

Art Wheeler played as a guard for the Princeton Tigers from 1892 to 1894. He quickly established himself as a dominant force on the offensive and defensive lines. Wheeler was a key figure in a Princeton team that achieved remarkable defensive success, holding an astounding 26 out of 35 opponents scoreless during his three-year tenure. His exceptional play was instrumental in Princeton's undefeated 11-0-0 season in 1893, a year in which they were crowned National Champions. Wheeler's consistent brilliance earned him prestigious recognition, as he was named to Walter Camp's All-America Team three times. Notably, the intense rivalry game between Princeton and Harvard was canceled during Wheeler's playing years, preventing him from participating in that historic contest.  

Football Legacy:

Art Wheeler's football legacy is firmly rooted in his dominant play for Princeton during the 1890s. As a key force in the Tigers' line, his contributions were pivotal to their defensive strength and national championship victory in 1893. Wheeler's three selections to Walter Camp's All-America Team underscore his status as one of the elite players of his era. His consistent excellence and leadership on a team that showcased defensive mastery have ensured his enduring recognition in the annals of early college football.
