""Upon Further Review" the NFL Keeps Instant Replay"

Last updated 📅 2025-03-30

March 30, 2004 - The group voted to extend the Instant Replay System for another 5 years at the NFL Owners Meetings. The plan with the extension was that proponents hoped the next time the vote would come up, they could tweak it and make it a permanent fixture in the NFL. Their wish came true in 2007 when a 30-2 vote gave replay permanence so that it would not have to be debated yearly.

At that meeting, the owners would reward coaches who were successful on their first two reviews: a third challenge, according to Operations.NFL.com.

From 2005 to 2025, NFL instant replay underwent further refinements to improve accuracy and efficiency. In 2007, the league expanded reviewable plays to include on-field rulings on the field of play after the two-minute warning initiated by the replay official. Goal-line cameras became a point of discussion, with increasing calls for their implementation to aid in scoring decisions. The 2014 season saw a significant change, with all replay reviews being conducted by the referee on a tablet at the sideline, with consultation from the officiating department in New York. This centralized system aimed for greater consistency in rulings.

The challenge system also saw adjustments. Initially, coaches were awarded a third challenge only if their first two were successful. Starting in 2024, this was modified to grant a third challenge if just one of the initial two was successful, offering teams more opportunities to correct potential errors. Throughout this period, the debate continued regarding the balance between ensuring correct calls and the impact of replay on game flow, with ongoing tweaks intended to minimize delays while maximizing accuracy.

"Touchdowns Prove to Have Value"

March 30, 1889 - At the football rules convention, early rules makers voted for a new rule: "A touchdown is made when the ball is carried, kicked or passed across the goal-line and is held either in touch or in goal. We get this info from Parke H. Davis's fine book "Football the Intercollegiate Game," published in 1911.
The point value of a touchdown has evolved significantly since its inception. In 1881, a successful kick after a touchdown became a tiebreaker over a field goal. By 1882, four touchdowns were valued higher than a field goal, and two safeties equaled a touchdown...
