"A Unique Season: Tufts' 1875 Football Record"
Last updated 📅 2025-06-03
June 4, 1875 - Harvard faced Tufts University in the first game between two American colleges played under rules similar to those of the May 1874 McGill-Harvard contests. The rules included each side fielding 11 men at any given time, the ball was advanced by kicking or carrying it, and tackles of the ball carrier stopped play. Surprisingly, the game was won by the upstart Tufts squad.
Tufts University officially recognizes its 1875 football program record as 2-1. This seemingly straightforward record holds a unique historical quirk: the inclusion of a significant victory over Harvard on June 4, 1875, as part of that season's tally.
Beyond this intriguing detail, Tufts also played a pivotal role in Maine's football history. Their win against Bates College marked the very first intercollegiate football game ever played in the state of Maine, highlighting Tufts' early contribution to the sport's expansion.
