June 2, 1875 - Alexander Graham Bell makes the first sound transmission. Although he didn't patent the telephone until March 7, 1876, and didn't ask Watson to "come here" until March 10, 1876, this day in 1875 was a milestone.

Think of it: in today's world, sound is transmitted everywhere around us! In the realm of football, we see and hear sound transmissions on TV, radio, the internet, stadium PA systems, and even in NFL helmets. The game definitely would not be the same without this great accomplishment.

"Radio Patent of Marconi"

June 2, 1896 - In a somewhat related event, Guglielmo Marconi applied for the US Patent of the radio on this day. His Patent was granted on July 2, 189,7 in a fierce race with others to be the first to get the famous patent. Radio, too, as discussed above, has had significant bonuses for the game of football.

Guglielmo Marconi's pioneering work and subsequent patent of the radio in the late 19th and early 20th centuries laid the very foundation for how American football is experienced today. While Marconi's initial focus was wireless telegraphy, his invention fundamentally enabled the mass dissemination of audio broadcasts...

"Thorpe Ties the Knot"

On June 2, 1945, a significant chapter in the personal life of the legendary Jim Thorpe unfolded as he married Patricia Askew. This union marked Thorpe's second marriage, following his 15-year relationship with Iva Miller, which produced four children: James Jr., Gail, Charlotte, and Grace. His first marriage ended in divorce in 1941.

Patricia Askew became a steadfast presence in Thorpe's life during his final years, remaining his wife until his passing in 1953. While they did not have children together, Askew played a crucial role in managing Thorpe's affairs and public appearances during a time when the iconic athlete faced financial struggles. Some accounts suggest she was instrumental in securing him compensation for his fame. Their bond lasted until Thorpe's death at the age of 65, highlighting Askew's devotion to the celebrated, yet often troubled, super athlete in the twilight of his life.
