April 1st, a date often synonymous with lighthearted pranks, also holds a few notable, if less earth-shattering, moments in American football history. While not a prime time for major league decisions or game action, the date has occasionally marked significant player movements and organizational shifts. For instance, early franchise relocations or the formalization of coaching hires might have been announced on this date, often after the flurry of the main offseason had begun to settle.

"April Fools Day came a Few Months Early at the Rose Bowl"

One of the most significant pigskin pranks happened at the Rose Bowl in early January one year.
The Rose Bowl, played on Monday, January 2, 1961, contained a fascinating secondary story. That year, the Washington Huskies were pitted against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. At halftime, the Huskies led 17–0, and their cheerleaders took the field to show the spectators in the stands in a card stunt, a routine involving flip cards depicting various images for the audience to raise...
