"Glenn Ressler: The Ground-Pounding Legacy of Zeke"

Last updated 📅 2025-05-21

Born on May 21, 1943, in Dornsife, Pennsylvania, Glenn Ressler carved out a reputation as a formidable force on both sides of the line during his time at Penn State University.

While the National Football Foundation highlights his role as the Nittany Lions' center, Ressler was also a dominant presence as a middle guard on defense. His exceptional skill and relentless effort earned him the prestigious Maxwell Award in 1964, recognizing him as the nation's premier player. Notably, he was only the fifth lineman to receive this honor in its then 28-year history. A two-time All-East selection and a consensus All-American in 1964, Ressler's prowess was undeniable. A standout performance in 1963 saw him record an astounding 15 unassisted tackles in Penn State's stunning 26-0 upset of top-ranked Ohio State, earning him Lineman of the Week honors from both the Associated Press and Sports Illustrated. His collegiate achievements culminated in his well-deserved induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

College Career

Glenn Ressler was a two-way standout for the Penn State Nittany Lions from 1962 to 1964. Initially showcasing his talents as a center on offense and a linebacker on defense for the freshman team in 1962 (freshmen were ineligible for varsity play at the time), he quickly rose to prominence as a dominant defensive presence. Playing middle guard, Ressler became renowned for his ability to shut down opposing running games. His junior season in 1963 was particularly remarkable, highlighted by his 15-tackle performance against Ohio State. Beyond this standout game, Ressler amassed 7 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries, and an interception during that season. His senior year solidified his status as a national star, earning him the Maxwell Award and consensus All-American honors, recognized across various positions on both offense (center, guard) and defense (guard, tackle, linebacker). He was also named College Football Lineman of the Year by the Philadelphia Sportswriters' Association and participated in both the East-West Shrine Game and the Hula Bowl following his senior season.

Road to the Pro Game

Ressler's collegiate dominance made him a highly sought-after prospect. He was drafted in the third round of both the 1965 NFL Draft (36th overall by the Baltimore Colts) and the AFL Draft (17th overall by the Denver Broncos). He ultimately signed with the Colts. Initially, Ressler served in a reserve role, showcasing his versatility by substituting at both offensive and defensive tackle during his rookie year under coach Don Shula. By his third season in 1967, Ressler found a permanent starting position at left guard for the Colts, a role he would primarily occupy for the remainder of his professional career. This move to the offensive line allowed him to utilize his strength and intelligence to protect the quarterback and open running lanes.

Football Legacy

Glenn Ressler forged a solid and respected ten-year career in the NFL with the Baltimore Colts (1965-1974). While his college accolades were heavily focused on his defensive prowess, he became a reliable and consistent offensive lineman in the professional ranks, primarily at left guard, but also displaying the versatility to play center and tackle when needed. He was a key member of the Colts teams that won the NFL Championship in 1968 and Super Bowl V in 1970. Ressler's quiet professionalism and dependable play earned him the respect of his teammates and coaches. He was a cornerstone of the Colts' offensive line during a successful era for the franchise.
