"Loyd Phillips Star Razorback and Bears Lineman"

Last updated 📅 2025-05-01

Loyd Phillips was born on May 2, 1945, in Fort Worth, Texas. He established himself as one of the greatest defensive players in the University of Arkansas' history.

College Career

Phillips was recruited by Hall of Fame coach Frank Broyles from Longview High School in Texas. He played defensive tackle for the Arkansas Razorbacks, quickly becoming a key player. From 1964 to 1966, Phillips was a dominant force on the Razorbacks' defense. During his time there, the team achieved a 29-3 record, including an 11-0 season in 1964, when they were named national champions by the Football Writers Association of America. Phillips amassed 304 career tackles for the Razorbacks.

Road to the Pro Game

Phillips' exceptional college career led to him being drafted by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 1967 NFL draft, with the 10th overall pick. His time in the NFL was unfortunately shortened by a leg injury. He played for the Bears from 1967-1969, and finished his pro career with the New Orleans Saints.

His college career at Arkansas was marked by outstanding individual performance and team success. He is a member of the University of Arkansas All-Century team, the 1960s All-Decade Team, the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor, the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame, the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame, the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame, and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
