San Francisco 49ers Franchise Awarded

On June 4, 1944, a new chapter in professional football history began as the San Francisco 49ers franchise officially formed, joining the ranks of the fledgling All-America Football Conference (AAFC). This marked the genesis of one of the NFL's most storied organizations, born out of a burgeoning post-war appetite for professional gridiron action.

The 49ers quickly established themselves as a competitive force in the AAFC, captivating fans with their dynamic play. They were a cornerstone of the league throughout its brief existence. When the AAFC eventually merged with the older National Football League in 1950, the San Francisco 49ers, alongside the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Colts (the original AAFC Colts, not the later Indianapolis Colts), were among the select teams granted entry into the expanded NFL.
