"The Mountaineer Comet: Ira Rodgers' Trailblazing Career"

Born on May 26, 1895, in Bethany, West Virginia, Ira Rodgers was a transformative figure for the West Virginia University Mountaineers, excelling as a halfback and quarterback from 1915-1917 and again in 1919. Known as the team's fastest player, Rodgers led a resurgent Mountaineer squad after World War I, guiding them to eight victories in ten games in 1919 and leading the nation in scoring with 147 points. His senior campaign saw him orchestrate dominant wins and even conquer traditional powerhouses. Beyond his rushing prowess, Rodgers was also a premier early passer, showcasing his arm strength with a remarkable 51-yard空中傳球 in 1917. His exceptional talent earned him consensus All-American honors in 1919, the first in WVU history.

Born on May 26, 1887, in Exeter, New Hampshire, Edward "Ed" Hart displayed remarkable resilience and talent during his football career at Princeton University from 1908 to 1911. His journey was uniquely challenging from the outset. In his final high school game, a collision with the goalpost resulted in a serious neck injury, forcing him to wear a steel and leather neck brace for his initial seasons with the Tigers. This adversity, however, did not deter Hart. His determination and skill shone through, culminating in consensus All-America honors in 1911, the year he finally shed the restrictive brace. Renowned sportswriter Grantland Rice lauded him as "one of the greatest tackles of all time," a testament to his exceptional ability despite the early setback.
"The Guardian of Grange: Bernie Shively's Enduring Impact"

Born on May 26, 1902, in Paris, Illinois, Bernie Shively was a cornerstone of the University of Illinois football team from 1924 to 1926. Playing guard, Shively's athleticism and power were instrumental in the success of the legendary halfback Red Grange. The National Football Foundation highlights Shively as the agile and quick blocker who consistently created opportunities for Grange's electrifying runs. For three seasons, Shively anchored the Illinois offensive line, spending two alongside Grange and earning consensus All-America honors in his senior year of 1926, recognized for his outstanding contributions on both offense and defense.
