July 9, 2018 - Billionaire David Tepper purchases ownership of the Carolina Panthers for an NFL record $2.275 billion. Tepper was quoted as saying, "I am thrilled to begin this new era of Carolina Panthers football and am humbled by the overwhelming excitement and support for the team."
The new owner is the founder and CEO of global hedge fund Appaloosa Management and had a net worth of over $11 billion. He had recently relinquished his 5% minority stake in the Pittsburgh Steelers by selling it, so as to be free to invest in the Panthers. Tepper promised to keep the Panthers in Charlotte, the city they started in in 1993.
