"Calvin Roberts Coll Football Hall of Fame Tackle"
Calvin Roberts was a dominant American football tackle who left an indelible mark on the sport, particularly at the collegiate level. Born on May 25, 1927, in Hector, Minnesota, Roberts showcased his exceptional talent at Gustavus Adolphus College from 1949 to 1952.
During his time at Gustavus Adolphus, Roberts proved to be a force on both sides of the line, excelling as both an offensive and defensive tackle. He played a pivotal role in the team's success, contributing to three Minnesota Intercollegiate Conference (MIAC) championships. The Golden Gusties, with Roberts anchoring their lines, boasted an impressive 23-1 conference record during his four seasons.
Roberts earned All-MIAC honors three times, and in 1951, he received the first of his two All-America accolades. The 1951 Gustavus Adolphus team went undefeated. Roberts' college career culminated in another league title in 1952.
Roberts was drafted by the New York Giants in the 3rd round (33rd overall) in 1953. However, an illness prevented him from pursuing a professional career. He later served in the Marine Corps, where he played for the All-Marine Corps team, the El Toro Marines. After his military service, Roberts coached at Augsburg College before becoming the physical education supervisor for the city of St. Louis Park.
Calvin Roberts passed away on March 3, 1966. His college achievements were recognized in 2003 with his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.
