"Los Angeles Buccaneers NFL Franchise Forms"
July 11, 1926 - Los Angeles Buccaneers franchise forms. The team dissolved after playing just one season.
When you think of NFL teams in Los Angeles, the Rams and Chargers usually come to mind. But did you know the city had an NFL team way back in 1926? Enter the Los Angeles Buccaneers, a fascinating, albeit fleeting, part of early professional football history.
The Buccaneers were an anomaly from the start. Though nominally representing Los Angeles, they were essentially a traveling team based out of Chicago. Why? Transcontinental travel was incredibly difficult in the 1920s, and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission reportedly refused to allow professional football to be played in their stadium.
Comprised largely of players from California colleges, the Buccaneers played their entire 1926 NFL schedule on the road, compiling a respectable 6-3-1 record. They never played an official NFL home game in Los Angeles. The franchise folded after just one season, a casualty of the league's instability and the logistical challenges of the era. Their brief existence serves as a unique footnote in the NFL's formative years, a testament to the early ambition of bringing pro football nationwide, even if the infrastructure wasn't quite ready.
