Gamble was an extraordinary running back with Colgate University from 1984 to 1987. At the end of his collegiate career, Kenny led the nation in all purpose yardage, 2,425, and with his 1816 rushing yardage.

He achieved remarkable success, leading the nation in all-purpose yardage with 2,425 yards and rushing yardage with 1,816 yards. He was the top rusher for Colgate in all four seasons, setting 29 school records. In his senior year, 1987, he once again led the nation in Division I-AA all-purpose yards with 2,097, and was second in rushing yards with 1,411. Notably, he won the inaugural Walter Payton Award, recognizing him as the nation's best player at the Division I-AA level.
