1990 Buffalo Bills
Jim Kelly led the 1990 Buffalo Bills, they ended up scoring 26.8 points per game, 329.8 yards of total offense a game and they were just such a tremendous offense that came they started off a four-year run of Super Bowl appearances. Never got to win that big one and take home the Lombardi but a very potent offense.
And they had that K-gun offense where the no huddle offenses sort of started. They could run the no huddle offense because they were just so talented and had a lot of really smart players on that roster. You know, Thurman Thomas, James Lofton, Jim Kelly and the gang just did a great job to complement their great defense. But what a tremendous offense, the 1990 Bills had.
2018 LA Rams
How about this great offensive team? The 2018 Los Angeles Rams. Well they played against Patrick Mahomes in the Chiefs. The Rams had Sean McVay as their coach and he was brilliant when he came in and had the offense scoring 32.9 points per game. Jared Goff was the quarterback and played with brilliant players like Cooper Kupp and back Todd Gurley running the ball, just a tremendous offense That average 32.9 points per game, well, that's good for the 12th best of all time and NFL history.
1999 Rams
While you know we're going to talk about the Greatest Show on Turf in this conversation about the most potent offenses ever in the NFL. The 1999 St. Louis Rams averaged 400.8 total yards per game and 32.9 points per game, of course, led by upstart quarterback Kurt Warner and Head Coach Dick Vermeil. They went to and won Super Bowl XXXIV against the Tennessee Titans in a game that came right down to the wire on that one. As a matter of fact it came down to the last yard!
We've talked about that in other episodes on Pigskin Dispatch. A lot of the credit too goes to Marshall Faulk, the Hall of Fame running back. Had over 1000 receiving thousand yards, rushing 1381 yards on the ground, five and a half yards per tote of the rock. Faulk caught 87 passes for 1048 yards. Isaac Bruce hauled in 77 passes for 1165 yards as Torry Holt snagged 52 for 788 yards, Az-Zahir Hakeem, Ricky Proehl and a slew of other talented weapons helped in the attack.
These are the reasons they were truly the Greatest Show on Turf.
2016 Atlanta Falcons
You talk about high-powered offenses, how about the Atlanta Falcons of the 26-16 season 33.8 points per game. 415.8 yards per game, and ole Mattie Ice, Matt Ryan quarterbacking that team to 38 touchdowns and the throwing for 4,944 yards. Devonte Freeman and Kevin Coleman at the running back with Mohamed Sanu, Julio Joneshelped provide just a dangerous offense that season for defense to tangle with.
The Falcons team in 2016 was one of the most potent offenses ever to play the game in the NFL.
1983 Washington Redskins
How about that 1983 team from Washington, DC. Yes, the Redskins as they were called back then averaged 33.8 points per game 383.7 yards per game and they were just a great team. They ended up a little bit short of their goal, they lost to the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XVIII, 38 to 9. But during the season they had some just really flashy offensive of weapons going on Joe theisman at the quarterback 3,714 yards 29 touchdowns and you know just John Riggins the diesel pounded out 3.6 yards period and he just did great and had 24 rushing, touchdowns himself and really helped that 33.8 points per game average.
2011 New Orleans Saints
Who can forget Drew Brees and those 2011 New Orleans Saints. Clicking at 34.2 points per game with an average of 467.1 yards per game what a tremendous job that they did. You know, Brees was one of the most accurate passers in NFL history. In 2011 he had just had a fantastic year with 46 touchdown passes in that season and 5400 passing yards with and 76 TDs. Surprisingly they didn't even have a thousand yard rusher but they really didn't need it because they had a stout roster. Backs Mark Ingram, Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles and even Chris Ivory got in on it at the time. They ran the ball 75 times and they caught a ton of passes from the backfield and they had a stalwart stable of receivers led by Marques Colston and Jimmy Graham catching the balls from the wide receiver in tight end positions, just a great team 2011 Saints.
1998 Minnesota Vikings
How about an offense that had a great mix of players, young and old about the 1998, Minnesota Vikings were one of those teams. Thehad an average of 34.8 points per game, 391.5 yards per game of total offense, and they had that great young wide out player in Randy Moss who was being fed the ball by quarterback.
Randall Cunningham and of course, Chris Carter, the old veteran wiley wide receiver was still there. He had over a thousand yards receiving and even six straight seasons, we talked about the thousand yard mark and you know, that team was just fantastic. Moss also had a thousand yard season as he caught 17 touchdown passes to boot and, you know, just a great team and too bad they couldn't win it all that year, but a great 1998 Minnesota Vikings team will forever be remembered all the same.
2011 Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers of 2011. Another tremendous team Aaron. Rodgers was on fire that season as a team, scored a record of 560 points, which is a fourth highest mark and league history at that time, their 405.1 yards per game total offense and 35.0 points per game, were one of the best ever Rogers had 4,643 yards, passing career high 45, touchdowns and only six interceptions, and just a great season with led by his receivers Nelson and others in that great Green Bay offense, 2011 Packers.
2013 Denver Broncos
We need to talk about at least one Peyton Manning team, the 2013 Denver Broncos 457.3, whopping yards per game, 37.9 points, scored per game and those the Broncos came up just a little bit short of the Lombardi Trophy. That year the Seahawks had a really good team and just blasted them with a 43 to 8 final in that exciting Super Bowl that they played in, but the Broncos scored a staggering 606 points during that regular season.
Led by Peyton Manning with his excellent season. He had you know Eric Decker caught a 1200 yard receiving Demaryius, Thomas, Wes Welker Julius Thomas, all had more than 10 touchdowns and Manning he laid waste by just blowing past and winning the MVP honors that year had a great year in 2013s Denver Broncos.
2018 Chiefs
We talked about the 2018 Rams earlier, and how that they battled the 2018 Kansas City Chiefs and how tremendous the matchup Monday Night game was. The Chiefs ended up having 425.6 yards per game, and were averaging 35.3 points per game. Hard to lose too many games when you're doing that, and that's probably why they went as far as they did that season.
Patrick Mahomes, was establishing himself as a force in the league tossing for five thousand yards and 50 touchdowns in the same season. The second year QB was the Most Valuable Player of the NFL and very deservedly. So was their offense, who scored 565 points and that's a third. Most in NFL history. Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill were the favorite targets of the franchise quarterback.
This next team may not seem to fit the bill of this context of this discussion but indeed they do
1950 LA Rams
The 1950, Los Angeles, Rams, still have the NFL record for scoring average, 38.8 points per game. Remember, this is the 1950’s age when they didn't throw the pass very much and they, you know, didn't have a whole lot of games. Well, yeah, they scored 456 points in those 12 games. That was 13% of the entire NFL's scoring that season. Put that into perspective for a second. 13% of all the scoring in the National Football League in 1950 was done by one team. Those 1950 LA Rams, you know, just so great quarterback, say two Hall of Fame quarterbacks Bob Waterfield and they also had Norm Van Brocklin, the Dutchman also Crazy Legs Hirsch and Tom Fears receiving and just some tremendous complimentary players like the running of Vitamin Smith. These men and the foresight of the coaching staff make this the top scoring offense of all time in an era where running the ball between the tackles ranked supreme!
