Superstars Competitions and Football

Do you remember the Superstar Competitions Show that used to air on ABC Television back in the day? Our guest Clay Parker and his friends do and they are assembling a website that collects all of the data, stats and videos they can to pay tribute to this fun and groundbreaking show that so many enjoyed.

Introduction

Superstars was an American sports entertainment competition television series that aired on ABC from 1973 to 1986. The show featured athletes from various sports competing in a variety of events, including track and field, swimming, obstacle courses, and weightlifting.

The show was created by Bob Stewart and produced by Sports Action, Inc. Some early episodes of Superstars was hosted by Howard Cosell and Keith Jackson. Later seasons were hosted by various personalities.

The first Superstars competition was held in Rotonda West, Florida in February 1973. The winner was pole vaulter Bob Seagren. Seagren also won the second season of Superstars in 1974.

The Superstars folks are asking for our help

We are told that way back in 1973, ABC-TV in the United States debuted a two-hour special featuring ten top athletes from ten different sports competing in events that were not their own. The Superstars group project is trying to compile info for the Superstars Competition.

Clay tells us that they would love to find footage of the missing competitions to find more results. We have combed through hundreds of newspapers online for results but we still are missing several years. Late 1970s seems to be the toughest for US results, mainly the preliminaries.
