Walter Camp in California

Generally when we think of Walter Camp, we think of his presence on the sideline of Yale, in an East Coast setting in the autumn weather of the North East. Most of the time this is a completely accurate picture of the Father of Football. Football was spreading like wildfire across the country though around the turn of the century. The schools of the Midwest and Far West were looking for guidance to get their programs up and running. In California, Stanford was one of these intitution that at least at first wanted their gridiron program to become eleite and fast. The except was the handling of Fielding H. Yost just after his one season there. On a few occassions Stanford paid to have Walter Camp leave the New Haven area aftre the season had ended to go out West and coach up their elevens as well.
