Winged Helmets

First lets define what a winged helmet is NOT. The head shell logos of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Atlanta Falcons are not the "winged" helmets that are the subject of this discussion.

Wikipedia has a great description of our topic and says the winged football helmets are: "The winged football helmet is a helmet bearing a distinctive two-toned painted design that typically has sharp outward curves over the forehead forming a wing." A perfect example of modern winged helmets are the Michigan Wolverines.

Today’s Tidbit... When Leather Helmets Earned Their Wings

Timothy P. Brown gives us the history of the Winged Helmet design and its modern-day tributes on the gridiron.

The Original Leather Design of the Winged Helmet

The Winged helmet was originally a design of the leather helmets that had very pronounced leather browl panel, that was done in the art deco style of the era with a curly cue on each corner of the wider top-side to give it a winged-look. It was also an element that hade the helmet a bit more rugged and sturdy to last and protect its wearer during use.
